When we observe all that is wrong in the world, it is easy to get carried away with thinking that we can lend a helping hand and change things through our personal actions. After a time, however, we recognize that many of the disfunctions have been established for the benefit of a few. The realization that caring has little impact on the way things are leads us to simply let go of empathy and roll with it.
