There was a time back in the day when the main form of distant communication was via landline with analog telephone calls. The lines were limited so everyone had to wait their turn to chat over a static channel that went through a central exchange. Undesirable calls used to be few and far between simply because there wasn’t the bandwidth to accommodate them, but some special calls were always worth picking up for.
